“Anglo-Zambian” Curriculum

A well tested “Anglo-Zambian” curriculum is followed at Nkhwazi and emphasis is placed on the mastery of the “Three Rs” – reading, writing and arithmetic.  Children cover the Zambia Primary Course in its entirety but the curriculum is greatly expanded along British lines.  For example, the main reading schemes are the well-known and widely used Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn 360 and Wide Range and, in Mathematics, Ginn and Nelson Material is used to argument the ZPC Scheme.

The main subjects are taught by class teachers with classes divided into ability groups.  There are specialist teachers for music, physical education and information technology (computer studies).  The school also employs a fully qualified librarian, who is in charge of the well-stocked library and the reading schemes.

Individual progress is carefully monitored and reading age tests and proficiency tests in maths and English are regularly administered at appropriate grade levels.  Formal examinations for upper primary children take place each year in July and November and, at present, all Grade 7 children sit the Zambian Grade 7 selection examination for entry into Grade 8.  Nkhwazi’s Grade 7 results are invariably amongst the very best in Lusaka.
